Old vs New

Now this is a scene you don't see very often: a Shinkansen running along side a steam train.

This took place to mark the 10th anniversary of the extension of the Yamagata Shinkansen as far as Shinjo (新庄) in Yamagata Prefecture. The Yamagata Shinkansen is one of the so-called "Mini Shinkansen" lines which are not built to full Shinkansen standards but parallel existing routes, meaning standard gauge Shinkansen tracks run alongside the normal 1,067mm gauge of legacy lines.

Full picture and story in Japanese here (note: links to Japanese news stories often become invalid after a few days).

The linked report unfortunately doesn't mention the type of steam locomotive running here, but the Shinkansen is an E3 series, one of the two types to run on the Yamagata Shinkansen.
